He may not have had the artistry of Sunny Murray or Max Roach, but he was one of the greatest rhythmic drummers of all time.

The Allmusic review by Scott Yanow awarded the album 4½ stars calling it 'Advanced modal hard bop with all of the musicians playing in top form'.[3]
